Setting up FAQs
Initially, two years ago, when we spoke with Brian Abbott at the Mother Church, he thought we could keep our name. But after speaking to him in February 2026, he had to go back and ask his higher-ups, and they said we could not keep our name but would have to change it to whatever town we were in. If we were in West Hartford, it would be the First Church of Christ, Scientist, West Hartford.
Jemmy with Chuck Shimkus, our lawyer, and he has confirmed what I found on-line. In CT a church moving its location within the state and changing its name is not required to dissolve and reincorporate. It is done by filing an amendment with the Secretary of State with new address and name, and notifying the IRS of change and updating any internal bylaws. The filing with the Sec of state can be done online and Chuck would walk us through that if needed.
Update on Flood Risk (61 Park Road) 4/14/26
We are continuing to look carefully at the flood risk for this property. Right now, it appears that where we would build is outside the 100-year flood zone, but within the 500-year flood area.
We are reviewing issues such as excessive stormwater drainage and runoff during very heavy 500-year storms, any additional building requirements, potential insurance costs, and overall long-term safety.
We don’t have a final report yet. We will be working with engineers and other professionals to fully understand all risks, costs, and if a building on this property would work or not. Thank you for your patience while we are researching this.
